The Corruptor, an action-packed gem from the late 90s, is finally getting the recognition it deserves with a 4K Blu-ray release. This film, starring Chow Yun-Fat and Mark Wahlberg, is a hidden treasure that deserves a wider audience. I discovered Hong Kong action cinema through a Canadian cable channel, Showcase, which aired John Woo's classics, 'The Killer' and 'Hard Boiled'. These films, along with the coolness of Chow Yun-Fat, left a lasting impression on me. His American debut, 'The Replacement Killers', was a cult classic, but it was 'The Corruptor' that truly captivated my interest. Directed by the late James Foley, it's a gritty urban thriller with ultraviolent moments, including a thrilling car chase through Chinatown. The film, however, was a box office bomb, grossing only $15 million worldwide, which unfortunately pigeonholed Chow Yun-Fat into martial arts movies, despite his lack of martial arts expertise. This led to his breakthrough in 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon', another martial arts film, which ironically solidified his stardom in North America. The Corruptor's release in November by Arrow Video's Toy Robot Video label is exciting, especially with the possibility of reinstated censored footage.
